Breast Cancer Related Swelling, Lymphedema and Fibrosis

Objectives
1. Understand the incidence, risk factors and compression management of breast cancer related, swelling, lymphedema and fibrosis after breast cancer treatment.

2. Ability to apply effective compression to breast cancer related swelling, lymphedema and fibrosis for specific clinical presentations.

3. Choose an effective night compression garment for BC related lymphedema with or without fibrosis.

About the Presenter:
Joann Brooks PT, DPT, MPH, OCS, CLT is a Medical Advisor Consultant for Essity, Inc. She was the New England Medical Advisor in Lymphology representing Jobst, FarrowWrap and JoVi compression garments and related products from 2018 - 2025. She graduated from Northwestern University Medical School Programs in Physical Therapy in 1978 and went on to get a Masters Public Health from Boston University in 1989 and Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the MGH Institute in 2002. She is an APTB certified orthopedic clinical specialist since 2001 and a Norton certified lymphedema therapist since 2009. In addition to maintaining a clinical practice in orthopedics and then later in cancer rehabilitation and lymphedema therapy, she was an assistant clinical professor at the MGH Institute of Health Professions for over 20 years. She has over 35 years of management experience in acute care inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation and oncology. She has presented to many audiences on various topics in lymphedema including breast cancer related lymphedema and fibrosis, management of swelling and prevention of lymphedema after TJR, measurement and garment selection in select lymphedema populations, adhesive Velcro wrap compression considerations, efficacy and infection and inflammation in lymphedema, complete solutions to prevention and management of lymphedema. Joann’s passion is for quality survivorship of breast cancer patients.
